We are starting a new slightly experimental session on Sunday afternoons that will have the same model in one pose for 3 months. If it is successful we will extend it into next year. It is an opportunity to use this session for perhaps a long considered artwork, a series of studies from different angles or any other ideas you may wish to pursue. Our model will be Morgana, who many of you will know. She is an experienced and popular Spanish model. The session will be organised by club member Nicole Koenig. It will start on Sunday 11th September and will run on Sunday afternoons 2.30 - 4.30pm.

In the next 6 months the club's 5 year lease on the building comes up for renewal. We have had notification from the council of an increase in the rent that we will be paying. This coupled with the substantial rise in energy prices along with council rates and waste disposal means that we have to increase our income in order to meet these costs. At our last committee meeting it was decided that as from 1st January 2011 all session fees will go up by £1, and club membership will rise from £16 to £21.

After much discussion it was also decided by the committee that we no longer allow any photographing of models in the club. More details about this and other recent club news can be found in the last committee meeting minutes that will shortly be pinned on the notice board.

“Drawing in Paint” with Darvish
November 3-5pm on Sundays.

“The value of repeated ‘beginnings’ of paintings cannot be overestimated. Those who cannot begin do not finish” - Robert Henri

This series of four classes will focus on establishing a drawing in paint for the purpose of painting. Through the use of a strictly tonal “wash-in” we will explore the idea of simplifying our subject matter to get a better grasp on the complexities of painting from life. The aim being to find the most direct route to the expression of form.
In each class we will complete one painting in tone only. We will apply the same process to still-life, portrait, figure (using model) and landscape (done from photo for the practical purposes).

For this class you will need:
  • four white canvases larger than A4
  • a palette (preferably not white)
  • a few rags
  • a good selection of brushes
  • odorless turps (preferably “Sansodor” by Winsor Newton)
  • one color of choice (preferably a neutral earth color such as an brown or raw umber or even gray-green), and a white (titanium white is ok)
  • a palette knife and a tea spoon

It is helpful if you have taken my previous classes, but not mandatory as hopefully this will benefit both beginners and experienced painters. It will cost 60 pounds for the entire month to be paid upfront on the first day of class. Any questions please call me on 07768660598. Those interested please leave a name and phone number at the club.

Annual club exhibition - May 2010

Our annual club exhibition as part of the Brighton Festival will start on Saturday 1st May and be open for all Saturday and Sunday afternoons until May 23rd
We will be hanging the exhibition on Thursday 29th April so we need all artworks in the club by that day, 12am.
Each artist can submit up to 3 pieces. All must be framed unless they are on stretched canvas. Please do not submit clip frames. We also ask that all pictures are presented with mirror plates attached. This helps greatly with hanging and security. Please also attach on the back of each frame, a tag with: Your name, title of picture, the price and a number 1-3 to state your preference for hanging. (Number 1 being your first choice to be shown). This is in case we do not have space to hang them all. Please store the exhibition entries in the rack under the skylight in the main studio (It will be marked).
Sculptures will also be very welcome. A large plinth will be made available for them to be shown. Please contact Pippa (01273 474865) for more information about this.
We hope all pieces will reflect work done at the club.
There will be a small hanging fee of £1.50 per picture to help with the cost of advertising and the private view. Everybody exhibiting will be asked to help with invigilating on one of the open afternoons. A rota will be compiled nearer the time.
*Ideally all club memberships should already be paid up. So if you think your membership has lapsed, now is a good time to renew!*
Our exhibition is a good showcase of the wide variety of artwork our members do over the year. We hope you will join in.
The Private View will be 7 - 9pm Saturday 1st May.

Jan Korwin-Kochanowski Exhibition February - May 2010

The club was contacted recently by a local art dealer owning a large collection of drawings and paintings that were done by a member of the club between 1950 and 1970. His name was Jan Korwin-Kochanowski. He was a very talented painter and a much respected personality at the club over that period. We were asked if we would like to borrow them for a short while for an exhibition before he splits them upto sell on Ebay. We have taken this opportunity and put together a selection of the paintings on one wall in the main studio. If you are interested in owning any of the works you will be able to put an offer in on the Ebay site after the exhibition which will come down to make way for our own club show in May.
For more information on Jan Korwin-Kochanowski see the club history page and for pictures of the exhibition see the gallery page.
